0001411: mysqli accessed using object-oriented style does not work for insert_id or num_rows

Description

After performing an insert into the database

$mysqli->insert_id; //does not return a value while
mysqli_insert_id($mysqli); //works

$result->num_rows; // does not work;
mysqli_num_rows($result); // works
