I think the error is related to the blank field under 'To', which is for adding extra recipients to the PM. If I add my own screen name to that field, and click 'Submit', then the PM sends, but it also takes me back to the compose screen as if it were just a preview, so that's not a viable workaround (confusion factor is too high).
